Location: One Pillar Pagoda Street, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi. In the campus of Ho Chi Minh‘s mausoleum, right behind of Ho Chi Minh Museum.

With historical, human values imbrued with Buddhology spirit, One Pillar Pagoda, which was officially recognized as “the most unique architecture in Asia” by Asian Record Organization (Faridabad, India), becomes one of indispensable Vietnam tourist spots in travel notebook of tourists when going to Hanoi.

According to the legend, Emperor Ly Thai Tong (1028-1054) used to go to pagodas to pray to Buddha for a son. One night, the King dreamt of seeing the Bodhisattva sitting in a lotus throne and gaving him a baby boy.

After waking up, the King told mandarins about his dream. The monk Thien Tue advised him to build One pillar pagoda as a lotus-shaped tower like what he saw in his dream to honor the Bodhisattva.

The finished One pillar pagoda in Hanoi looks like a pink lotus flower with 1000 petals holding up a glittering golden Buddha statue.

When the pagoda was inaugurated, monks went around the pagoda and recited the Buddhist scriptures to pray for longevity of the king. For this reason, the pagoda is also called Dien Huu pagoda (long lasting happiness and good luck).

The unique architecture of One Pillar Pagoda (Vietnam) is that the entire temple is based on a stone column. That is the audacious combination of romantic and poetical imagination through iconic lotus flower and perfect solutions of structure with a system of wood beams.

Moreover, the One pillar pagoda, Hanoi is in a middle of a square-shaped lotus pond that might be a symbol for earth (round heaven, square earth).
